Little Rock, Arkansas – At a Little Rock school, the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission organized a unique day that centered on the value and the meaning of kindness.

Baseline Bilingual School was one of the three Little Rock schools where the commission held its Day of Kindness on Friday.

First, the students learned a chant that, according to the teachers, they use every day as an affirmation.

“Hate and unforgiveness in our world has to stop,” the students chanted as they repeated after their teacher.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is cited by school administrators as an inspiration because they believe that compassion and kindness originate on the inside.

“Kindness is taught to children at an early age then it follows them through their educational journey, and this is something they’re able to carry on into their life,” Baseline Bilingual School Principal Ida Wells said.

Every day, Wells has been teaching the pupils about various acts of kindness. On Friday, the students were taught to have compassion for people from different backgrounds.

“How would you show kindness to a homeless person?” Wells asked as she taught her students.

“We did an art lesson, and we did a journal lesson on if you were an ant how you would respond to the grasshopper that’s homeless now,” Wells said.

Giuliana Gallo claimed that learning this lesson helped her become closer to her peers.

“First we start playing more often I ask them if they want to be friends and they all say yes,” Gallo said.

After receiving Kindle Fires, students celebrated their day of kindness with pizza.
