Little Rock Zoo reports chimpanzee baby’s death
Little Rock, Arkansas – On Saturday morning, officials at the Little Rock Zoo announced that a young chimpanzee that had been born on August 23 at the zoo had passed away.
The infant, who had been born to Kianga, a chimpanzee who had been residing at the zoo since the year 2020, was exhibiting abundant signals of suckling, and it was clear that Kianga was providing the baby with great care.
At an early hour, the workers at the Zoo observed that the infant was pale and immediately notified the veterinary staff to seek aid. The newborn was placed down by Kianga, and the staff was able to effectively separate the infant from Kianga. The zoo’s veterinary personnel then came to the conclusion that the infant had passed away, according to a statement released by the zoo’s officials.
An enlarged heart and head trauma were found during the necropsy, according to officials from the zoo; however, it is not possible to determine if the head trauma occurred before or after the animal’s death.
A number of samples have been taken for analysis in the laboratory in order to further ascertain the cause of death.
