Voter demographics and developments in elections by age and gender

Little Rock, Arkansas – In particular, we were interested in learning more about the demographics of the electorate.

Previous elections may offer hints, but we must wait until the ballots are officially counted.
Future promise is not determined by past success, but some general trends stand out.

Results from the 2020 election indicate that women voted at higher rates than men, and that some age groups cast more ballots than others, according to the US Census Bureau.

Demographics are important, according to Robert Steinbuch, an Arkansas Bar Professor of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

“As we said, persons 65 and older are significantly more likely to cast ballots than, for example, those between the ages of 18 and 23. This is why demographics are important in getting people to the polls. Therefore, since those are the voters, you really want to battle for their vote,” Steinbuch stated.

According to the results, voters between the ages of 18 and 24 had the lowest turnout percentage, while those between the ages of 65 and 74 had the highest.

Steinbuch responded, “Well, because 18-year-olds go out to clubs and 21-year-olds do, or whatever it may be,” when asked what he believed to be the cause of the numbers.

“People have different demands on their time and also different concerns about the control of government and as we get older we tend to think about those things more and like I say go out to clubs less and that is why older folks tend to vote more,”Steinbuch stated.

In 2020, women voted at a rate of 68.4%, while males only voted at 65%, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to Steinbuch, when attempting to win over people with the causes they support, candidates take these groups into account.

Politics is played that way. “You compete for the votes of those who are truly casting ballots,” Steinbuch stated.
