Little Rock, Arkansas – In an era where scams are increasingly sophisticated and rampant, particularly during the holiday season, Entergy Arkansas is taking a proactive stance to educate consumers about potential utility scams. As part of Utility Scam Awareness Day on November 15, Entergy Arkansas, along with other consumer protection agencies, is emphasizing the importance of vigilance against these fraudulent activities.

Ventrell Thompson, the vice president of customer service for Entergy Arkansas, highlights the rising trend of scammers targeting utility customers. These “bad actors” employ advanced techniques to extract personal and financial information from unsuspecting individuals. With the holiday season approaching, the risk of such scams typically increases, prompting a need for heightened awareness and caution.

Entergy Arkansas points out that business imposter scams, where fraudsters falsely claim affiliations with well-known companies like utilities, have seen a significant rise nationwide. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2022 data reflects a worrying increase in losses due to these imposter scams.

The theme for this year’s awareness initiative is “Screen the Search,” focusing on the prevalence of scams through search engines. Entergy Arkansas shared five common scam types and offered tips to help consumers protect themselves:

  1. Search Engine Scams: Be wary of fraudulent websites that mimic legitimate ones. Always verify that you are on the official Entergy website or the myEntergy customer portal for any transactions.
  2. Cash Transaction App Scams: Avoid using third-party apps like Cash App, Venmo, or Zelle for paying your Entergy bill. Instead, use authorized payment methods available on the official Entergy website.
  3. Fake Caller ID Displays: Scammers can manipulate caller ID displays to appear as if they are calling from Entergy. Always independently verify the identity of unknown callers claiming to represent the company.
  4. Threats to Disconnect: Entergy never demands immediate payment or threatens to cut off service without prior notice. Any such threats should be regarded as suspicious.
  5. False Overpayment Scams: Beware of scammers who claim to refund overpayments on your Entergy bill. Always use verified channels like myEntergy or directly contact Entergy to check your account status.

In addition to these digital scams, Entergy Arkansas warns of less common but equally dangerous in-person scams. These involve individuals falsely claiming to need access to your property for repairs, inspections, or to restore power, often demanding upfront payment. It’s crucial to remember that Entergy Arkansas never asks for payment to restore power and will always provide notification or call before accessing your property.

If you suspect you’ve been a victim of a utility scam, it’s vital to report it immediately. Contact Entergy Arkansas, your bank or financial institution, and appropriate authorities such as the local police, state attorney general’s office, Better Business Bureau, or FTC. Documenting all related details, including receipts, names, websites, phone numbers, and email addresses, is essential for aiding the investigation and preventing future scams.

As the holiday season approaches, it is more important than ever for consumers to be aware of and vigilant against utility scams. By recognizing the common types of scams and following the provided safety tips, you can protect yourself from becoming a victim.
